Well, I've been meaning to post about so many things, but this one in particular is so very overdue. A while ago, a Chinese film came out called "The Secret" (不能说的秘密). I had very low hopes for this one, because it was written/directed/starred in by a pop star (Jay Chou) whose other movies didn't appeal to me at all.
Long story short, the film was amazing. It captures a feeling that's very special --like, a reminiscence of someone else's childhood, which I rarely feel when watching a foreign film. Plus, it's just done with such quality that I sometimes wonder if some other Jay Chou acted in Kung Fu Dunk. And this quality pervades every level, not just the acting. For example, the "science" of the plot's secret is never explained, which makes everything feel much more surreal. And there's reasons for why each character acts the way they do.
Short story shorter, if anyone asks me in the forseeable future to recommend a movie to kind of introduce them to Chinese language films, this will probably always be the one I list first. It's really enjoyable, and very touching.
Also, the lead actress has an amazing smile.
